Michael Gaertner & Associates has been involved in two Master Planning efforts at the famous Pier 19 in Galveston, one for George Mitchell and another for the Port of Galveston. Pier 19 is the home of the Mosquito fleet, and in 1974 was listed in the National Register and protected by amendment to the City Charter of the City of Galveston. Since that time, the boat basin and surrounding area has been neglected by the Port of Galveston, with portions of the Pier literally collapsing into the water.

The first attempt to revive the area was made by George Mitchell.
Offering to manage and maintain the area as well as make $1 million in improvements to the
infrastructure, the offer was rejected by the Port of Galveston. The second attempt, led by Wharves Board of Trustees Chairman John Ford (since replaced by Fred Wichlep), which resulted in a number of developers submitting development proposals stalled, however, the Wharves Board has since embarked on a $1.5 million project to repair the bulkhead. |
